Wielding a rafter-reaching voice, raw delivery, and a really sharp pen, Kailie Simpson instantly warrants attention.
The New Jersey-born singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist sings from the heart and writes straight from the gut. She pulls no punches and holds nothing back as she unabashedly infuses rock ‘n’ roll with spirit, soul, and style. After selling out shows throughout the East Coast and attracting the likes of producer Ben Rice [Norah Jones, The Jezabels, Daughter] to her corner, she introduces herself with a bang on a series of independent singles in 2022.
“When I sit back and think about the coming years and what I envision for myself- my one and only thought is to be more open, vulnerable and authentic. With age comes wisdom (or one hopes), so I continue to push my personal and creative boundaries by painting experiences that can be felt through my music. My personal experiences are not as ‘individualistic’ as I once believed... we all walk similar emotional paths, mirroring each other- and music is proof of that”
Growing up, being a musician was nothing more than a pipe dream. But that changed when she was asked to track some demo songs for a producer. “I spent the day in the studio and realized this is what I wanted to do forever. I quit college mid-semester and never turned back”
She holed up in a basement home studio, learned keyboards from YouTube tutorials, and closely acquainted herself with a baby grand piano. Initially, she fashioned herself a pop balladeer, but eventually heeded another calling inspired by the likes of Alanis Morissette, Janis Joplin, and Jet.
She assembled a full band and cut her teeth with countless gigs. She performed sold out shows at Arlene’s Grocery, The Bowery Electric, and Rockwood Music Hall, among other New York area hotspots. At the same time, she recorded with Rice behind the board.
Now, the first single “Question Everything” practically overflows with energy. Gritty verses give way to a soaring refrain ignited by distorted guitar and a stadium-size beat. She urges, “Question everything ‘cause what you see ain’t what you get.”
“ The curtain has fallen and many questions have been raised. Recently we’ve all been in a state of confusion and uncertainty. The division is presented to run deep but I believe we are more alike than we’d like to admit. Question Everything is an invitation to be open minded - cross boundaries- challenge your comfort zones. A call to action, an anthem for the masses”
On its heels, “Time Waits For No Man” illuminates another side of Kailie. She leans into the bluesy beat punctuated by guitar. Once again, she delivers a skyscraping carpe diem chorus.
“It’s a bit cliche but time literally waits for no one. Tomorrow is never promised or course. But the message is, theres no better time than NOW - so how do you plan to use it? Being “young” gives this sense of ease, to feel that theres an infinite amount of life in front of you. But moments and opportunity are fleeting. You know what they say - ‘the youth is wasted on
the young’ - but Im here to prove that that doesn’t have to be the case, and I’m ready to make the most of what I got, while I still got it. So I encourage the listeners to do the same.”
With such urgency and honesty, Kailie might just make you feel something too.
“I’m longing to exchange passionate energy. To allow people to dig deep and feel again, collectively feeding off the music and energy. Becoming electrified. Allowing the music to speak for itself and inviting listeners to let loose and feel it with everything they got.”
